Daily Grooming – In Depth

I recommend that you do the following in order to keep your Yorkie happy & healthy, and this will also help you and your pup in the future :)

For brushing:

1.) Use an in-between-bath spray bottle and lightly spray it on your Yorkie’s coat (if you brush your pup’s fur when it is dry, it could break).

2.) Use a brush that is specifically for your pet and brush him after you use the in-between-bath spray.

3.) Next use a wide-toothed comb and go over all of his fur.

4.) Then use a thin-toothed comb on his fur.

Two things you should remember while brushing your pup is that, one,  you need to brush everywhere there is fur, and two, if you find a mat to be gentle about getting it out, because it can pull too hard and hurt his skin.

Brushing your pup’s teeth:

1.) Use only dog-toothpaste.

2.) You can use a toothbrush or a fingerbrush.

3.) Brush all of your pup’s teeth just like you would your own.

4.) (Optional) You can give your pup a doggie breath-mint or you can get a doggie dental care spray and squirt it inside his mouth for freshness.

You should also wipe your pup’s eyes with a damp cloth everyday.  I hope these instructions help you and your pup :D

My little Yorkie

My Yorkie’s name is Biscotti, and she is going to be nine months on the 25th of May.  Her personality is timid when meeting a new person, or very protective (she barks a lot XD).

Today her favorite toy was a stuffed-animal monkey (inside is a squeaker), and she would run around the house with it while watching everyone smile at her, since she is so adorable when she plays.  She pounces and plays tag with it! XD
I give her a bath once a week, and today was her bath day.  After she was done, all she wanted to do was run and play!  She would twirl and chase her toy, and occasionally pretended it was alive!  She is so much fun, and I am very glad I picked a Yorkshire Terrier as my pet ^^

First Step: Will a Yorkie do Well with You (and Your Family)?

The most important thing you should do before getting your Yorkshire Terrier is to research their common behavior & care/grooming.  You might have just looked at a picture of a Yorkie, thought that breed of dog would be perfect for you, but you may be wrong.  It is always a good idea to find out about the type of dog you are interested in.

If you have a child, you should know that small dogs usually don’t do very well with little kids- to them, the Yorkie is a moving stuffed animal!  They might try to pick them up and cuddle them just like they would do with their other toys.  But Yorkies don’t like to be picked up by little children.  They might seem scary, or might be very annoying to your small pet.  Try introducing your child to him slowly and calmly, so as he doesn’t get frightened.  If you have older kids (at least 7 yrs. or so) then it shouldn’t be much of a problem.

Yorkshires, like most other dogs, need lots of attention. (Good thing they are so small; they can travel with you so they are not alone at home.)  It is not required of you to get another dog to keep your Yorkie company: they may get jealous of one another and fight (if you’ve had a pet before, you should know the difference between play-fighting and being angry while fighting).  They need their human family to take the time to play with them, do their daily grooming, and overall keep them happy.  I have a Yorkie, and I am the one that does most of everything for her.  Of course, everyone likes to play with her, as she reminds them of a little playful cat.

Most pets adopt to their first family’s tendencies; like sleep-times and eating time and play times.  It is best if you keep them on a good eating schedule, that way that will have to go potty at about the same time each day.  I feed my Yorkie twice a day; once at about 7:00AM, the other at 5:00PM.

You should brush your Yorkie once a day, so that no mats appear in his fur.  This can be done while chatting with friends, or watching TV, ect.  It is very hard and can be painful to get a mat out of your Yorkies fur, and he could lose some fur in the process.  Let’s just try to avoid that and brush as often as possible ;)

It is also a good idea to brush his teeth every day so that he doesn’t develop a gum disease and will keep his breath smelling good.  A gum disease can lead to heard problems, liver problems and/or kidney problems.  Another good idea for grooming your Yorkie is to wipe his eyes with a clean, wet cloth to get rid of any eye goobers that might have appeared during the night.

I know this is a lot of work, they are a very high-maintenance breed, but it is worth the time.  This will also help you bond with your dog.  I have only listed some of the things that will be required, for more information you may want to purchase a book or go to your library.

Here are several pictures of Yorkshire Terriers (the last one is an adult):
